JEE Main 2026 Reservation Criteria: Category Quota Explained

The JEE Main reservation criteria 2026 determine how reserved seats are allocated to eligible candidates during admission to participating institutions. It is important to understand that JEE Main reservation is primarily relevant to the seat-allocation and admission process rather than changing the question paper or giving a fixed percentage of marks to a category.
For admissions through the NIT+ system, including NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes, reservation follows the applicable Government of India rules. The final seat allocation is handled through the counselling process.

For Central Government educational institutions, the commonly applicable vertical reservation framework is:

SC ReservationScheduled Caste (SC) candidates are eligible for the prescribed SC reservation in institutions where the Government of India reservation policy applies.
Candidates claiming SC status must provide the required category certificate in the prescribed format during the admission process. The category information submitted during JEE Main registration should therefore be accurate.
ST ReservationScheduled Tribe (ST) candidates are eligible for the prescribed ST reservation under the applicable admission rules.
As with SC candidates, students need valid documentation proving their category. JoSAA publishes prescribed certificate formats for candidates participating in its counselling process.
OBC-NCL ReservationThe Other Backward Classes-Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) category has a 27% reservation under the applicable Central Government framework.
A candidate cannot claim the reservation merely because their community appears in a state OBC list. For Central Government institutions, the relevant Central OBC-NCL eligibility requirements apply.

The Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category has a 10% reservation in the applicable Central Government educational institutions.
